I HEART YOU

A sweet and simple graphghan featuring a bobbled heart.

I couldn’t wait to get this project on my hook, and it turned out exactly as I imagined it.  Don’t you love when that happens!  The I HEART YOU blanket is a simple graphghan with minimal color changes, making it the perfect graphghan for the beginner crocheter.  The alphabet is a classic backdrop for the fun texture of the bobble stitch heart and the ruffle border adds a little touch of whimsy perfect for a princess.  The baby girl receiving this gift will surely know that she is already loved so much.

I started this blanket with excitement for a little girl expected to arrive in 3 weeks.  During the process of making this blanket (which was only a week) my mother-in-law started her first round of chemo and another family member was diagnosed with a similar fate.  This blanket started with the desire to celebrate birth, but ended with the celebration of life.

Life is short and I am determined to enjoy it. I slowed down this week.  I let my toddler help with the dishes, even though it took 3 times as long to complete the chore.  I was slower to anger when my toddlers refused to sleep and read stories to each other instead.  I hugged them longer and told them I loved them often.  Life is beautiful, complicated, wonderful and not guaranteed.  Embrace every minute that you can, and remember to tell the important people in your life that you love them daily.

I HEART U GRAPH

The graph for the alphabt graphghan featuring a textured bobble heart. I HEART YOU blanket

Each box in the above graph represents 1SC.  In the heart I have included an x to represent the bobble stitch.  To begin start with a CH of 100 + 1 to turn.

ROW 1: Odd numbers are worked by following the graph right to left and will be the right side of the blanket.  1SC in the second CH from the hook and in every stitch across (100).

ROW 2: Even rows are worked by following the graph left to right and will be the wrong side of the blanket.  CH1 and turn (counts as your first SC). Work 1SC in each stitch across (100).

ROW 3: CH 1 and turn (counts as your first SC). Work 3SC in white, TIP to changing colors: on the last stitch before each color change you will insert your hook and yarn over and pull through once leaving two loops on your hook,  yarn over with the new color and pull through the two loops.  Carry your yarn as you work the rest of the row by crocheting right over the top of it changing colors as needed.

ROW 4-111: Continue following the graph pictured.  When adding Bubble Gum Pink into your rows make separate bobbins so that you are only carrying two yarns at any time.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: For the heart only we will create bobbles on the even rows, the wrong side of the blanket, which will make the texture stand out on the right side of the blanket.  As shown in the graph there will be 1SC in between each bobble.

To create the bobble stitch yarn we will start a DC, yarn over and pull through making four loops on your hook.  Yarn over and pull through the first two loops (normal DC), yarn over and begin a second DC instead of finishing the DC.  Make 3 more partial DC until there are 5 loops on your hook.  Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops.
